The Carbon Trust's activities in offshore wind

Offshore wind power can play a leading role in meeting renewable energy and carbon emission targets and improving energy security. However, offshore wind farm development has progressed less rapidly than originally hoped and currently faces significant barriers to growth, including high costs.

Recognising this, the Carbon Trust has published a major study on the future potential of offshore wind, Offshore wind power: big challenge, big opportunity based on analysis commissioned from The Boston Consulting Group and other industry experts. It outlines the challenging set of actions which government and industry need to take to deploy offshore wind at the required rate and scale, deliver the significant cost reductions possible and maximise economic benefits and job creation for the UK.

We have also established a major new technology acceleration project, the Offshore Wind Accelerator, in collaboration with five offshore wind farm development companies. Focused on cost reduction in the short to medium term, this will make advancements in key areas of technology such as foundations.
