Marine Energy Accelerator

About Strand B – Marine energy component development
The Carbon Trust is looking to work with UK companies and academic organisations that have relevant skills or technologies whether or not they currently have interests in marine energy. Strand B of the Marine Energy Challenge will investigate new components for marine energy devices.

    Strand B will involve:
  • UK developers and manufacturers of component technologies that could be used in marine energy devices; and
  • UK Academic research teams with expertise relevant to these technologies.

These organisations are invited to work individually or collaboratively to research these components and related technologies to understand how to make them more suitable to marine energy devices. The ultimate aim is to reduce the cost of energy from marine energy devices.
    The Marine Energy Accelerator Strand B offers support to applicants to:
  • Adapt existing technologies to new markets;
  • Develop new products;
  • Share the risk of developing new products and new markets, and;
  • understand the marine energy market and technologies

What are we looking for?

Previous work has identified certain key component technology areas, which will have the greatest impact on the cost-of-energy of the next generation of marine energy devices (shown below). The Carbon Trust is looking to support organisations with skills in these areas to assist with further investigation, technology transfer, adaptation or innovation, leading to lower costs and/or better-performing marine-energy components.

The Carbon Trust also welcomes well thought-out submissions in other component areas where applicants are able to present a strong case.

What are we offering?

The Carbon Trust is offering grants of £50,000-£250,000 to part-fund research into component technologies for marine energy devices. Projects are expected to last up to nine months.

The call for proposals opened on 1st January 2009.

Applicants will complete an initial application form containing an outline of the project, who will be involved and what it aims to achieve. The deadline for initial submissions will be 26th February 2009. The best applicants will then be asked to submit a full application detailing their plans.
