Strand A – Technical competition for device developers
To engage device developers in Strand A, the Carbon Trust is running a technical competition. This currently working with wave and tidal stream energy device developers that, with respect to the overall marine energy sector:
  • Are at an early stage of development. Devices will have been developed to the point of engineering design concepts, sufficiently detailed to take an objective view of their costs and performance characteristics, but not already developed to the point of large-scale prototypes being built/tested at sea; and
  • Have potential for costs of energy that are significantly lower than current front-runner devices.

The Carbon Trust is supporting work to increase and validate the technical evidence about costs and performance that substantiates the devices’ costs of energy, as outlined in the Introduction.

Generally, successful device developers are expected to benefit by receiving:
  • New costings and engineering analysis, design and testing results; and
  • Reports written for an investor audience that can be used to help justify cases for financing/investment.

There is no specific deadline for strand A, applications will be reviewed approximately on a quarterly basis throughout 2008. The next review date is March 31 2008.

In you are a device developer interested in applying please download an application pack here.
