EMEC’s facilities currently consist of four wave energy converter test berths, which are situated 2km off Billia Croo on the Orkney mainland. Subsea cables link each berth to a substation on shore, which in turn links to an 11kV transmission cable connected to the national grid and a data/communications centre located in nearby Stromness.
In addition, EMEC is in the process of installing test berths for tidal stream energy generators at the Falls of Warness, off the outlying island of Eday. These berths will also be grid-connected and linked to the same data/communications centre in Stromness.
The Carbon Trust is providing funding to support the operational costs of EMEC.
