Carbon Vision Leadership Programme

Investing in world leaders in low carbon technology development.  The Carbon Vision Leadership Programme will support outstanding scientists and engineers as they become world leaders in low carbon research. They will drive development of the technologies that will be required as the world moves towards a low carbon economy.

EPSRC and the Carbon Trust have allocated £2.3 million to support the Carbon Vision Leadership Programme. Within this programme, only two awards will be made to outstanding scientists and engineers of growing international reputation and with the potential to become world leaders in low carbon research.

The Carbon Vision Leadership Programme will provide flexible support to research leaders and their teams to build low carbon research capacity, promote innovation, cooperation and knowledge transfer between the research community and industries engaged in commercialising low carbon technologies.

We are looking for outstanding academics who are confident communicators with a track record in low carbon, or related research, the potential to further develop their research team to enable internationally leading low carbon research and experience in commercialising research outcomes. We are also looking for host institutions with a demonstrable track record in supporting the emergence and commercialisation of a range of low carbon technologies. Therefore, in considering applications particular attention will be given to the extent to which the host institution is prepared to provide a supportive financial, academic and commercially-aware environment to foster the growth and continuity of the Carbon Vision Leadership Programme.

The closing date for applications for awards under the Carbon Vision Leadership Programme passed in December 2005 and we are currently in the process of assessing the bids received. The assessment process will involve:

  • Postal peer review. Each application will be sent to a minimum of four referees, at least one of which has been nominated by the applicant.
  • Once referees comments have been received, EPSRC and the Carbon Trust will reject applications with insufficiently supportive referees comments.
  • The applications will then be considered by a Panel that will interview candidates. In addition the panel may visit applicant and host institution. The panel will be made up of scientists, engineers and industrialists of international repute and will include EPSRC and Carbon Trust representatives.

The selection process will be complete by May 2006 and announcements made regarding the recipients will be made at this time.
