This section provides an overview on how to estimate the CO2 (or CO2 equivalent) emissions savings from a projectgenerating or saving electricity. This document only provides a brief overview of calculating carbon reductions and does not attempt to give full guidance that addresses all possible low carbon applications and processes. For more detailed analysis and guidance, please refer to our list of recommended websites.
The Carbon Trust will use CO2 as the standard reporting unit when measuring emissions. This is to avoid confusion as some schemes report the amount of Carbon (C) emitted rather than CO2(note: 1tonne C=3.66 tonnes CO2). For projects which propose to reduce the emissions of gases other than CO2, the reporting unit will be CO2 equivalent (CO2e) (see Green House Gas conversion section for conversion guidelines).
The Carbon Trust will be focusing on low carbon and energy efficient technologies rather than specific carbon abatement projects and therefore, emission reduction levels will be based on estimated levels of application of these technologies. As a guide to assessing the reduction potential of a technology, the Carbon Trust will refer to existing methodologies as reference material.
