The Henderson Group is a family-owned business in Northern Ireland incorporating five companies: Henderson Wholesale, Henderson Retail, Henderson Group Property, Henderson Foodservice and Henderson Print.
The wholesale business has been distributing food and grocery-related products to the convenience retail sector for more than 100 years. They currently supply more than 400 independent retailers and 55 company-owned convenience retail outlets and petrol stations throughout Northern Ireland.
To help Henderson meet its environmental and cost-saving goals, the Carbon Trust provided funding for a number of energy surveys, as well as for energy management training.
Recommendations: Many of the Carbon Trust’s recommendations were implemented, including a new lighting scheme based closely on aisle and equipment layout, with infrared and daylight sensors for storage areas and forecourts. New refrigeration systems were also installed. These alone consume about £4,000 less energy each year.
Savings: Including reduced maintenance costs, there have also been considerable operational savings. In terms of carbon dioxide emissions, this means a typical reduction of 40 tonnes a year per store. The resulting saving equates to about £2,200 per annum, for a typical store. Not only this, it also enhances the retail environment for customers. Phillip Wright, Senior Property Manager at Henderson said, “We couldn’t ignore rising energy costs or the environmental impact any longer. So it was a natural business decision to investigate potential savings. What we hadn’t appreciated was quite how much the focus of the Carbon Trust would help us. The audits also led directly to the writing of a corporate energy efficient specification which has helped us get competitive tenders for new more energy-efficient equipment.”
