Data centre operator is 300th achiever of Carbon Trust Standard

The Carbon Trust Standard Company has certified TelecityGroup, the industry leading provider of premium network independent data centres, as its 300th achiever. The announcement comes just two years after the Carbon Trust Standard was established in 2008.

The total carbon footprint of businesses and public sector bodies certified by the Carbon Trust Standard is now nearly 32 million tonnes of CO2e1. The 300 Standard achievers have so far together cut their emissions by 2.1 million tonnes of CO2e representing an average reduction of just under 7% per organisation over two years. These reductions have saved them the equivalent of £72 million in energy and fuel costs.

As a well-established leader in the carbon certification market, the Carbon Trust Standard believes in the importance of encouraging customers to strive for excellence in real carbon reduction. It certifies organisations that have met rigorous criteria for measuring their carbon footprint, demonstrated they have an energy and carbon management system fully integrated into the business, and have reduced their carbon emissions over time. Certified organisations must also show that they have the infrastructure and investment in place to ensure they continue to improve their carbon performance.

As the 300th company and first specialist data centre services provider to achieve the certification, TelecityGroup is helping to prove that data centre organisations can play a role in managing the carbon impact of greater ICT usage. The company achieved the Carbon Trust Standard by demonstrating an improvement in carbon efficiency of over 10%2 from January 2007 through to December 2009 across the company’s UK operations and subsidiaries, as well as committing to delivering year-on-year improvements.

Harry Morrison, General Manager of the Carbon Trust Standard Company, said:

“In just two years, we’re delighted that over 300 UK organisations have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard. It will not only stand participants in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme in good stead for the first league table, but will also enable all these organisations to demonstrate to their customers, investors, stakeholders and employees that they are genuinely committed to reducing carbon emissions and minimising their impact on climate change.

“We believe that the rapidly increasing number of organisations achieving the Carbon Trust Standard indicates a shift in the UK marketplace, and a growing willingness to commit to long term strategies to reduce carbon impact year on year. Our 300th achiever TelecityGroup is an excellent example of this.”

Michael Tobin, CEO of TelecityGroup, said:

“As the services we provide are at the heart of the digital economy, it is crucial that we continue to strive for environmental best practice and ensure our energy usage is as efficient as possible. To be the first specialist data centre services company to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard across our UK operations shows both our continued commitment to environmental leadership and the combination of investment and proactive management we have taken to measure and significantly reduce our carbon emissions.”

1 CO2e refers to units of “carbon dioxide equivalent” as greenhouse gases produced by industrial and agricultural processes include not only CO2, but also methane (CH4); nitrous oxide (N2O); hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs); perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)
