Carbon Trust Enterprises Limited is the commercial arm of the Carbon Trust and through the development of low carbon businesses supports the Carbon Trust’s objective of making the business case for climate change.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of the Carbon Trust, Carbon Trust Enterprises brings a unique combination of skills and attributes needed to turn carbon-reducing ideas into reality.

Carbon Trust Enterprises aims to be a leading creator of valuable carbon reducing businesses in the UK and beyond and develops new businesses which provide co-investment and strategic opportunities to partners who can bring the skills and capital investment to complement those of the Carbon Trust Group. Current lead projects include:

  • Connective Energy aims to become the leading supplier of low carbon heat solutions. It will achieve this through the design, development and operation of heat pipelines linking sources of excess heat with industrial and commercial end-users across the UK.

  • Insource Energy helps customers to build bespoke solutions that maximise the value of production wastes. We reduce waste and energy costs and save carbon. Insource Energy is particularly focused on developing solutions for customers in the food and drinks sectors.

  • Partnerships for Renewables works in partnership with public sector bodies, such as Local Authorities, NHS Trusts, Universities and Central Government organisations, to develop and manage on-site renewable energy projects. Uniquely Partnerships for Renewables has been established to work exclusively with the public sector and brings best-in-class project development tailored to the particular needs of the public sector.

  • The Low Carbon Culture Company helps companies reduce their carbon emissions by changing employee behaviour. It combines Carbon Trust’s expertise in managing carbon with proven change management techniques, to make employees able and willing to act to reduce their carbon emissions.


Ongoing development activity is taking place to identify new venture opportunities for delivery over the next 12 to 18 months. Over time, these businesses will consist of a range of commercial low carbon ventures and services, including spin-outs, joint ventures and fee-based services.
