Key points to remember
- Define your business needs carefully and make sure that your chosen solution matches these criteria.
- In justifying your project consider factors other than pure energy efficiency and cost saving, e.g. positive impact on the working environment and productivity, contribution to regulatory compliance etc.
- Produce a specification including all your requirements before approaching a contractor(s) – this will form the basis for subsequent design development and negotiation. Be clear up front what your bid evaluation criteria will be, e.g. lifetime costs.
- Select only appropriately experienced and qualified contractors to provide you with a bid. Where possible, solicit more than one quote and ask for, and check, references.
- Establish a good working relationship with all potential contractors from the outset. Encourage contractors to visit your site, and provide as much information as possible.
