Energy losses can be reduced by insulating the outer surfaces of process equipment. Covering the surface of liquids can control evaporation losses from heated liquids, although this is not always possible.
- Ensure Adequate Insulation
All steam pipework in particular should be insulated to prevent heat losses, and damaged or missing insulation should be repaired or replaced.
- Check for Leaks
Even a small leak can waste a lot of steam, so any leaks should be found and repaired promptly.
- Identify Redundant Pipework
On older steam distribution systems, some pipework may have become redundant. Any redundant parts should be sealed off or isolated.
- Ensure that Steam Traps are Working Efficiently
Sticking steam traps can be a major source of steam loss and should be checked regularly.
