Housekeeping

Process control systems have significant influence on the overall energy use by controlling all the processes on a site. Therefore it is important to make sure they are well maintained and regular checks are carried out.

  • Carry out a walk around
Check regularly for signs of poor control. See Signs of Poor Control. Further guidance and checklists are given in Conducting a process control health check (GPG354).
  • Count the number of controllers that are set to manual
The best controlled plants have less than 2% of control loops on manual control. Over 10% may mean that the control system is not be operating efficiently.
  • Ensure that control equipment is regularly maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Monitor energy consumption of process.
Changes in the energy use per unit will show if process control is being less, or more, efficient.
