Some electrical equipment exhibits an effect known as power reactance. The result is that some of the current is working against the useful supply, rather like driving a car with the brakes on.
The combined measure of this unwanted effect is your power factor. A low factor places an increased load on your power supply and means that you could pay more for your electricity.
However, Power Factor Correction (P.F.C.) equipment is available which corrects the power factor effect and reduces the load on the supply.
If you operate a lot of equipment it may be worth investigating your power factor:
- ask an independent energy expert to carry an assessment
- if necessary, consider whether P.F.C. equipment will save you money.
