Management

  • Implement a Motor Management Policy (MMP). This is a structured approach to the purchase and repair of a company's motors, designed to ensure that the best economic decision is made each time.
  • Be aware of where all the motors in your business are located. Most motors are used in other equipment such as fans, pumps, and compressors.
  • Ensure motors are well maintained, motors in poor condition will have reduced efficiency and a shorter-lifespan.
  • Investigate the opportunities for controlling the speed of your motors and applications automatically.
  • Motors are often oversized for the application, replacing it with a smaller motor would consume less electricity. Each motor should have a rating plate on it that gives information on its rated delivered power and performance.
  • Investigate if it is possible to swap motors around between applications to get better 'motor matching' with no additional purchasing costs.

A motor running for 11 hours a day (4,000 hours a year) at a typical commercial or industrial site costs ten times more in electricity than its capital cost.
