Maintenance

Good maintenance is necessary as a motor in poor condition will have reduced efficiency and a shorter-lifespan.

  • Keep all Drivetrain elements (gears, pulleys, belts or other couplings) in good condition. Worn components can lead to a significant fall in the efficiency of a motor-driven system.
  • Ensure that the alignment of motor-drive couplings are not misalign. This has the added benefits of reduced heat and vibration resulting in a longer motor life.
For example, a 0.6mm offset in a pin coupling can lead to an 8% power loss and eventual coupling failure.
  • Make sure that maintenance inspections include:
    1. a thorough visual inspection
    2. checks on belt tension, gear lubrication, etc.

Fact

A motor running for 11 hours a day (4,000 hours a year) at a typical commercial or industrial site costs ten times more in electricity than its capital cost.
