- Have a maintenance schedule. It would help to produce a checklist of activities to ensure the heating system and controls are checked frequently and thoroughly.
- Check insulation levels and increase them wherever practical to reduce the need for heating. To find out how well your building is insulated you could monitor how fast the building loses heat when the heating is switched off. The slower the heat loss, the better the insulation
- Annual boiler checks. Service boilers annually and ask for the report on combustion efficiency. This should show an improvement after the service.
- Upgrading existing boiler and heating systems, or replacing them with more energy efficient alternatives, can significantly reduce energy use and costs. Depending on the age of the system, savings of 20% or more are feasible.
- Check pipework. Check the insulation around pipework and water tanks, and replace any damaged or missing sections.
- Ensure thermostats are calibrated annually to ensure they respond correctly to actual temperatures.
