Saving energy at work and at home

We all know that saving energy will help prevent climate change. But it can also make us more comfortable at work, give us greater job security and save us money on our own energy bills.

Saving energy benefits us all

There are times when we all feel uncomfortable at work. The room might be too hot or cold, or the sun may stop us from seeing our screens. All these things can affect our performance.

Effective energy management creates a better working environment and can make us all more productive. It will also help your company become more competitive, giving you greater job security.

And of course by saving energy you will be doing your bit to prevent climate change.

Make energy efficiency part of your daily routine

It’s surprising how much energy you can save, just by making small changes to what you do every day. There are small things you can do, that will make a big difference:
  • switch lights off when you leave – this can reduce lighting costs by 15%
  • use blinds to direct sunlight upwards – this stops rooms overheating and prevent glare on computer screens
  • turn off electronic equipment when it’s not in use

Making sure the building stays at the right temperature is equally important, as this will save on heating costs. Don’t tamper with thermostats – if there is a problem with temperature, report it to the office/factory manager. Keep furniture away from radiators and make sure windows are closed when the room is being heated or air conditioned.

Feel at home with energy saving

Saving energy shouldn’t stop when you leave the office. You can save on your own energy bills by getting into good habits at home:
  • replace normal light bulbs with energy saving ones
  • only wash full loads, at a high spin cycle and at lower temperatures
  • turn off electrical equipment when it’s not being used
