RGE Engineering

Manufacturers of injection moulded parts for the ‘white goods’ industry, RGE Engineering employs 240 people at its UK headquarters in Cambridgeshire. They found themselves spending more than £250,000 a year on energy at the Cambridgeshire site and requested a carbon survey to try and lower that figure.

“We discovered we could cut energy costs by almost £80,000 a year, just by implementing simple measures such as fitting insulation jackets and power optimisers to our injection moulding machines and installing sensors on the lighting in the warehouse.”
Peter Dearlove, Quality Systems and Environmental Manager, RGE Engineering

Custom Glass Ltd

As one of the largest sealed glass unit manufacturing businesses in Merseyside, Custom Glass Ltd were keen to cut their annual energy costs of more than £160,000. A carbon survey from the Carbon Trust highlighted potential annual energy savings of more than £30,000. After installing new energy saving equipment, they appointed an energy manager and produced a written energy policy to raise staff awareness of how they can all help.

“In the first four months alone, we saved 30 per cent on the previous year’s electricity bill.”

The Feathers Hotel & Catering Group

This Group’s eight hotels in the North West of England had a combined annual energy bill of approximately £500,000. After a free carbon survey of the Leyland in Preston, the Willow Bank in Manchester, the Queen in Chester and Llyndir Hall in Rossett, Chester, they discovered they could reduce their overall energy consumption by 18.7%, saving around £87,000 a year. The cost of implementing the measures was estimated to be around £45,000, giving a simple payback period of just six months.

“One year on, we’ve managed to achieve a 24% consumption saving and we’re continuing to find new opportunities to become more energy efficient.”
Philippa Craig, Group Financial Accountant, The Feathers Group

Johnstons of Elgin

Scotland based Johnstons, established in 1797, turns raw wool and cashmere into high-end, sought after garments, performing every step of a complex process themselves. After a carbon survey, our recommendations included a programme of behavioural and organisational changes that could be implemented with no added investment. In the first year alone, these changes saved the company more than £100,000, approximately 20% of its gas and electricity costs.

“After saving a staggering £100,000 in the first year of working with the Carbon Trust, we can’t wait to see the impact of the rest of their recommendations on the business.”
James Dracup, Managing Director, Johnstons of Elgin

Carbon Footprinting

Thousands of UK companies have reduced their carbon footprints and saved money on energy costs by working with the Carbon Trust. We have developed a package of resources to help organisations to understand what a carbon footprint is, how to calculate it and how to go about reducing it. Carbon surveys are an important first step in the process of managing your carbon emissions.
