Climate change issues for investors

To avoid the worst effects of climate change we need to keep greenhouse gas concentrations below at least 450 per million carbon dioxide equivalents (ppm CO2e) and possibly lower still. To remain below this level, annual global emissions must peak within a decade - followed by deep cuts in emissions.

Current market assumptions

Our studies show that industry analysts are not taking account of the need to move to a low carbon economy into their assumptions for economic growth. In fact, current market assumptions would result in greenhouse gas concentrations rising to at least an estimated 700 per million carbon dioxide equivalents (ppm CO2e) and potentially higher than 1000 ppm. At these levels, there would be a very high risk of catastrophic climate change.

We think that these market assumptions will need to be adjusted if policy makers implement regulations to meet the stated aims of the UNFCCC, G8 and EU to limit global warming to no more than 2oC.

Investment issues

Climate change-related issues are going to become evermore important to businesses and their investors. Well-prepared companies will have a major competitive advantage. Four of the key drivers of change are:
  • Regulations
Some sectors will have regulations to incentivise or force change, such as maximum product emissions standards.
  • Consumer behaviour
Consumer preferences may significantly change as climate change issues become more widely understood and more lower carbon products become available
  • Technology
Companies that can develop, or access, the best technologies at lowest cost will have a very significant advantage
  • Cost of carbon
Policy makers are beginning to introduce ‘cost of carbon’-schemes on business’ carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
