What are the eligible costs? 

The Applied Research Grant is designed to cover the costs of developing your technology. Therefore a number of business costs are specifically excluded – based on State Aid legislation.
 
 

Please see the table below for costs that we can and cannot pay for as part of your project with us.

Personnel  Researchers, technicians and other supporting staff employed to the extent and for the period of the research activity.   
Instruments, equipment land and premises  Used for research activity  Any use that generates an income – including sale 
Services  Any services which have been used exclusively for research activity.  All purchases should be conducted at arm’s length with no element of collusion.   
Overheads  and operating expenses  Cost of maintaining the research facilities and staff offices. Eligible costs are defined by the ‘EC Framework for State Aid for Research and Development’ – including: Materials,  supplies, telephone, facsimile and postal costs, energy charges and licence fees.  Profit, bonuses, interest payments of any kind, dividend payments, recoverable VAT, loss of sales or consultancy incomes, sales and marketing costs, and the costs of product development and manufacturing.  Profit, bonuses, interest payments of any kind, dividend payments, recoverable VAT, loss of sales or consultancy incomes, sales and marketing costs, and the costs of product development and manufacturing.  
Patent application costs  Generating the information required for the application (where the Intellectual Property is developed as part of the project and information generated is part of the development process). Patent search fees only eligible where the research will inform the development process. Obtaining licenses to use relevant background Intellectual Property for the project.
