Research Challenges
Research Challenges
As part of our mission to help move to a low carbon economy in the UK, the Carbon Trust developed an approach to accelerating research towards commercial value – Research Challenges. Its aim is to focus on overcoming the specific technical barriers that are holding back the next generation of low carbon technologies. We intend to make investments of up to £10 million per 3-5 year project and each will be focused on a specific challenge.
Key features of the new initiative will be the scale of projects and their focus on meeting specific challenges that are facing the most important low-carbon technologies. We also intend to support the work with commercial investments, and may also offer conventional grants for some research challenge activities.
Polymer Fuel Cell Challenge
Accelerating mass fuel cell markets through step-change cost reduction
Algae Biofuels Challenge
Developing technology for mass production of algae oil for biofuel use*
Pyrolysis Challenge
Commercialising a process to make ultra-low-carbon biofuel from waste
Advanced Photovoltaic Challenge
Delivering low cost solar cells via a new high growth UK technology company
