Micro Combined Heat and Power Accelerator

Micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP) systems are designed for small commercial and domestic environments. The systems produce electrical power and thermal energy from a single energy source – and could save a lot of energy when compared to traditional systems (such as condensing boilers and grid-supplied electricity).

Our Micro-CHP Accelerator is to date one of the most comprehensive assessments of the real-world performance of micro-CHP systems ever undertaken. The project aims to:

  • Collect real-time data and assess the carbon performance of the Micro-CHP units relative to condensing boilers
  • Identify any technical, commercial and regulatory barriers to adoption and how they could be addressed and
  • Provide general information to inform future policy decisions and standards relating to Micro-CHP.

The project involved a major field trial of 87 (Micro-CHP) units in both domestic and small commercial applications measured against over 30 condensing boiler installations. At each site, up to 20 data parameters were measured at five-minute intervals. In carrying out the project, we generated an extensive dataset on building characteristics and household energy demand profiles which is currently being used for leading-edge academic research and future policy development.

Interim update

An interim update was published in November 2007. Some of the key insights it offered were:

15% to 20% carbon savings

In small commercial applications, where Micro-CHP systems were installed as the lead boiler

5% to 10% carbon savings

In households with high and consistent heat demands.

Micro-CHP should be considered eligible for policy support such as Feed-in Tariffs

With safeguards to ensure that devices are installed properly and in the right places

The interim dataset, including details of the field trial methodology, is available on request. The field trial has now been completed and a final report and full dataset will be published later this year.
