Studies have found that companies who use advanced metering equipment tend to use less energy – thereby saving money. Up until now, it has only been cost-effective for companies with annual energy bills over £50k to install such equipment. Recent advancements in the technology, however, mean that advanced metering is becoming more accessible.
The Advanced Metering Technology Accelerator was a 2-year field trial that explored the benefits of advanced metering to small and medium-sized enterprises. The project published its findings in 2007, which included:
- Carbon saving
An estimated average of over 5% (2.5 MtCO2) per year at no net cost to the UK.
- Payback on investment
Metering equipment paid for its within 1 year for companies with multiple sites or higher levels of consumption.
Our report called on the government to accelerate the uptake of advanced metering technology amongst the UK’s small and medium-sized enterprises.
