Strand C: Installation, operation & maintenance projects
Installation, deployment and maintenance account for a lot of the costs associated with marine energy. Strand C works with companies to try and reduce these costs for both existing and future wave and tidal stream technology.
We offered grant funding, or are commissioning research on device developers’ behalf, in 2 main areas:
- Operations strategies
Reducing the costs of offshore operations strategies, including engineering analysis and R&D.
- Associated technologies
Developing associated technologies to reduce the cost of offshore operations strategies
Our strand C projects have typically been awarded between £100 - 250k. All projects will produce a ’business case’ for future investment to move from prototype-testing to commercial development of a wave or tidal farm. Issues which have been investigated so far include:
- Weather window maintenance
- Foundation design (for high tidal stream environments)
- Installation methods (for both wave and tidal)
