I am absolutely delighted with the four Carbon Trust surveys we commissioned. Our work with the Carbon Trust has added great impetus to our drive to become more aware of energy matters
Rupert Hughes, the Trust’s newly appointed Energy & Utilities Advisor
The business case
Following Carbon Surveys at each of its four sites, it was estimated that £65,000 could be saved annually through upgrading lighting and heating control, and replacing boilers. A new combined heat and power (CHP) system could lead to a reduction of a further £150,000, and cut the Trust’s combined carbon emissions by 300 tonnes.
Based in Surrey, the Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust employs more than 4,000 people across four sites: St. Helier Hospital, a 600 bed general hospital; Epsom General Hospital, with 400 beds; and Sutton and Nelson Hospitals, both outpatient and day surgery units. Due to its substantial utilities bills totalling £1.5m per year, the Trust became aware of the need to become more energy efficient as a means to drive down costs; therefore, Rupert Hughes, the Trust’s newly appointed Energy & Utilities Advisor, contacted the Carbon Trust for expert advice on energy savings.
The technology
A Carbon Survey was undertaken on each of the Trust’s four sites and made the following recommendations:
- Replacing current boilers with condensing boilers
- Upgrading the lighting (lamps and fittings)
- Introducing additional heating zone controls
- Encouraging ‘ownership’ of the hospitals’ building management systems
- Carrying out general good housekeeping measures
- Raising staff awareness
The Carbon Trust predicted that, by following these recommendations, Epsom & St Helier Hospitals could potentially save over £65,000 a year.
The Carbon Trust report also recommended that a CHP scoping study be carried out at the two major hospitals. Early indications are that CHP could reduce the Hospital’s energy bills by £150,000 a year and cut CO2 emissions by 300 tonnes.
Rupert says, “I am absolutely delighted with the four Carbon Trust surveys we commissioned. Our work with the Carbon Trust has added great impetus to our drive to become more aware of energy matters and has helped us to become more energy efficient. The potential for utilising CHP, especially at St. Helier Hospital, is really exciting and we are looking at ways of taking that forward.”
