Ground source heat pumps

Take natural occurring underground low-level heat, and convert it to high-grade heat by using an electrically driven or gas-powered heat pump. Water is re-circulated in a closed loop underground and delivered to the heat pump, which is usually located inside the building.

Considerations

You need the right geological condition at the site for this technology to be viable – please contact a specialist for advice.

These systems are best suited to new-build projects when they can be included in the building design. Installing the system will also require a large amount of civil engineering works.

Ground-source heat pumps need electricity to run – however the output exceeds the required electrical input.

Payback period

You could easily heat a small office with a 5-10kW system, costing £5,000-£10,000

Installing systems into existing buildings is more expensive than incorporating them into ‘new builds’.
