Housekeeping and maintenance

A regime of good housekeeping and maintenance can lead to long term energy savings. Even new lighting systems need to be maintained to keep the designed performance through life.

Housekeeping

Lighting can never be efficient if it is left on when it is not needed. An easy way to reduce energy consumption in your building is to inform and engage your employees about the difference they can all make.An immediate – and free – way of encouraging employees to switch off lights when they leave a room is with the use of stickers located near light switches. Why not order some of our stickers?

Alternatively, if you are keen to explore other ways of engaging staff why not take a look at our Employee Awareness Campaign materials.

Daylight is the only free light source we have, so ensure that you are getting maximum benefit. Window blinds can be used to allow daylight into a building whilst shielding users from direct sunlight.

Maintenance

Before embarking on any new lighting project, it is first worth considering the maintenance of existing lighting and developing a schedule for maintaining this and any new lighting. Without proper maintenance, the performance and the energy efficiency of your lighting will be worsen over time.

A proper maintenance schedule should include the cleaning of luminaires, especially reflectors and panel diffusers as well as re-lamping when needed.

As lamps age, their performance deteriorates so a one-off bulk replacement of older lamps may also be worth considering.

A fresh lick of paint applied to walls and ceilings can also make the world of difference, although dark colours should be avoided as they do not reflect light well.
