Building fabric should keep heat inside your building - so, it can help you save a lot of money on your energy costs if it's properly maintained.
The building fabric technology overview (PDF) gives an introduction to the main building fabric energy saving opportunities for businesses.
It's vital to carry out maintenance tasks regularly. If you don’t regularly check your building fabric and fix problems as they occur, it's far more likely you will waste money on energy. Regular maintenance is also valuable because it catches problems early on, so they don’t become larger and more expensive problems. See the relative benefits of different kinds of building fabric below.
Check walls for draughts – pay particular attention to areas around:Skirting Roof joinsWindow and door framesSeal any gaps where draughts can be felt – this will reduce heating costs. How to implement draught-proofing
Replace any cracked panes and frames. Draughts can be reduced by sealing unused windows and fitting draught stripping to other windows that need it. After fitting draught stripping, remember to regularly check that it’s still in good condition. Note – if your windows have draught stripping, you can use trickle ventilators to provide a controllable amount of fresh air.
Door closers, seals and draught stripping should be kept in good repair. It's also a good idea to think about sealing unused doors to reduce draughts.
Block up any unused, open chimneys to reduce heat wastage (but make sure there's still enough controllable ventilation). It's often easiest to do this when you’re redecorating.
