Building fabric: Housekeeping

If you spend money heating your site, then you want that heat to stay inside. To do this, it’s vital you make sure your building fabric is doing a good job. Here are some ideas to help you make sure you aren't wasting energy (and money) because of your building fabric.

The building fabric technology overview (PDF) gives an introduction to the main building fabric energy saving opportunities for businesses.

Scheduled inspections

The only way to find out if you’re wasting energy through your building fabric is to go around the site and check:

  • Comfort levels
  • Time and temperature settings of heating appliances
  • Damp and condensation (can damage building fabric)

Checks need to be carried out regularly and take account of different times of the day/year. It's often a good idea to involve staff by compiling a checklist of possible areas of concern and asking them to keep an eye on things.

Doors

Put operating instructions near any automatic or motorised doors.

Sometimes, doors need to be left open for long periods (for example – in an industrial warehouse). In this case, make sure you clearly display information on:

  • How long doors should remain open
  • When other access doors should be used
  • Any interlock controls

Consider fitting automatic closers to external doors. It’s also a very good idea to fit automatic closers to any internal doors that separate areas with different heating or air conditioning needs. Learn more in our refurbishing and upgrading section.

Heating and air conditioning systems

Make sure you are using the system's controls to achieve your target temperature.

Also, remember to close all windows and external doors when heating or air-conditioning systems are in operation.

Curtains and blinds

Draw curtains and lower blinds at the end of each day to help save heat (especially during winter).
