The frozen food industry believes that many frozen food companies may have built in safety margins within their supply chain temperature controls well over the requirements for excellent customer service. Together we are examining the opportunity for temperature efficiency within the frozen food industry based on the current legislative parameters.
This project involves eight companies, eight products and eight different cold stores representing the industry in both size and product sector, ensuring temperatures are logged for a range of frozen food products, from ice cream to frozen savoury food, throughout the cold chain.
Frozen food is typically stored at -21°C or below and companies are averse to risking the integrity of their products, even though the legal storage temperature is -18°C. Working collaboratively across the value chain, we aim to demonstrate that -18°C is the more appropriate temperature - making a significant impact in reducing carbon emissions across the frozen food supply chain.
When this project is completed, we will be in a position to influence the whole industry in storing and transporting their food at temperatures that save significant amounts of carbon without jeopardising safety or quality.
