NHS Carbon Management Programme

NHS Carbon Management (NHSCM) provides technical and change management support to help NHS Trusts to produce a Carbon Management Plan and to achieve significant reductions in energy costs and carbon emissions. The overriding aim of the programme is to embed carbon management across the whole organisation, and to make the business case to the Board for cutting carbon.

Recruiting new participants

Participants work their way through a 5 step process to measure their current carbon footprint, identify practical ways to cut carbon, and to draw together the best projects into a fully costed Carbon Management Plan. The NHSCM programme provides practical support in the form of analysis tools, technical expertise, workshops for staff and management training to help raise the awareness of climate change among both staff and patients.

Carbon and energy are set to become a vital issue for NHS Boards. The NHS is responsible for about 3% of total UK carbon emissions, and has an annual energy bill of over £500 million. It also has the largest capital spend programme in Europe.

Given these figures, there is no doubt that the NHS will be expected to play its part in the Government’s objective of cutting UK carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, and the DoH and the new NHS Sustainable Development Unit are working on policies and carbon reduction targets to this end. Managing your NHS Trust’s carbon emissions will also enable you to reap the maximum benefit from forthcoming regulation, including the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive.

NHS Network
Recently launched, the NHS Network gives energy managers and estate managers the opportunity to share energy efficiency best practices and ideas with colleagues across NHS organisations.
The network is free for NHS managers working on energy issues. Members can search for messages by specific topic and learn and build on what others have already done.
