The Carbon Trust has developed a carbon management solution tailored to the needs of the Higher Education sector. The overriding aim of the programme is help the sector tackle the threat of climate change, and to achieve significant reductions in energy costs. Carbon Management will also help raise awareness of climate change and energy use among University staff, academics and students.

Participants will receive support from expert consultants in areas such as provision of analysis software and tools, training and workshops for staff and senior management, and identifying carbon saving projects. The ultimate output is a fully costed carbon management plan to make the business case for cutting carbon.
The programme takes the form of a year long 5 step process which guides universities through a systematic analysis of their carbon footprint, the value at stake and the opportunities available to help them manage carbon emissions in a strategic manner. Being a true partnership the programme, on average, requires a minimum university input of 2 days per week in order to effectively complete and implement a carbon management plan:
Carbon and energy are set to become a vital issue for University senior management teams. Given the intellectual leadership role of the sector, the Government, students and academics will expect Universities to lead the drive to cut UK carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. Managing carbon emissions will also enable Universities to successfully navigate forthcoming regulation, including the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the new carbon and sustainability strategy being developed by HEFCE.
To date we have partnered with 68 universities across the UK within this programme. Oxford Brookes University was a pioneering participant, and you can watch a short video case study of Oxford Brookes University's carbon management progress to date.
