Carbon Reduction Label

The Carbon Trust has launched a new carbon reduction label to provide a measure of a product's carbon footprint (embodied GHG emissions) across its life cycle.

More importantly, the label will also allow a business to demonstrate its commitment to manage and reduce the carbon emissions of its product as well as helping everyone start to make informed decisions about the products that they buy.

The Carbon Trust’s carbon label will be one of the first opportunities companies will have to demonstrate their commitment to reducing the carbon emissions embodied in their products directly to their consumers. Recent research carried out for the Carbon Trust concludes that companies see climate change as the primary issue likely to impact upon their corporate reputation during 2007. We envisage that this label will eventually act as the bridge between carbon conscious companies and their consumers.

A commonly accepted standard

The label will be underpinned by a set of standards and guidance which is being developed to ensure consistency in measuring carbon footprints (GHG emissions embodied in products and services) and in making and communicating reduction claims.

The standards will be based on a methodology developed by the Carbon Trust through our leading supply chain work.
