NHS Carbon Management Programme

With the aim of the embedding carbon management amongst key stakeholders. NHS Carbon Management (NHSCM) provides technical and change management support to ensure the reduction of CO2 emissions is no longer seen as just as an 'estates issue', but becomes the responsibility of the whole organisation.

Recruiting new participants

Participants work their way through a 5-Step process to first measure their current carbon footprint; identify practical ways to reduce carbon emissions, and ensure that the organisation is left with a strategic implementation plan to reduce its impact on climate change and capture cost savings:

The NHS emits approximately 1 million tonnes of carbon each year and has an annual energy bill of approximately £400 million. It also has the largest capital spend programme in Europe. With the Department of Health’s mandatory target for the NHS to reduce its carbon emissions by 0.15million tonnes by 2010, and regulation from the EU ETS and Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, reducing carbon emissions and capturing cost savings is an important issue for NHS Trust Boards.
With the primary aim to deliver energy efficiencies the NHSCM programme provides NHS staff with practical support in the form of analysis tools, technical expertise, workshops for staff and management training to help raise the awareness of climate change among both the staff and patients of an organisation.

The pilot phase of this programme was launched on the 31st October 2006 and concluded in March 2007.

Hospitals sector overview
The UK’s healthcare sector spends more than £400 million per year on energy. Implementing a few simple techniques can help to reduce the amount of energy consumed in a hospital.

Creating a low carbon future with the public sector
For public sector organisations throughout the UK, reduced carbon emissions can go hand-in-hand with increased operational efficiency. The Carbon Trust can help you to realise both goals.

NHS Network
Recently launched, the NHS Network gives energy managers and estate managers the opportunity to share energy efficiency best practices and ideas with colleagues across NHS organisations.
The network is free for NHS managers working on energy issues. Members can search for messages by specific topic and learn and build on what others have already done.
