The Carbon Trust has developed a carbon management product tailored to the needs of the Higher Education sector. The primary focus of the work is to reduce emissions under the control of the university such as academic, accommodation and leisure buildings and vehicle fleets.

Practical support will be given in areas such as identifying carbon saving opportunities, developing an emissions reduction implementation plan, provision of analysis software, workshop support for staff and senior management training. The programme will help raise awareness of the impact of climate change amongst university estates’ staff, academics and the student body.
Participating universities benefit from consultant support in the form of workshops and limited dedicated support tailored around the 5-Step process. This process guides universities through a systematic analysis of their carbon footprint, the value at stake and the opportunities available to help them manage carbon emissions in a strategic manner. The programme’s duration is 10 months. Being a true partnership the programme, on average, requires a minimum university input of 2 days per week in order to effectively complete the 5-Step process:
The programme will be supported by the Higher Education Carbon Management Toolkit, a web-based self-help workbook. The Toolkit captures lessons learned, is updated every year, and provides detailed carbon management process instructions, technical guidance and relevant tools. To obtain a copy of the Toolkit, you will need to register at the HE Network.
To date we have partnered with 48 universities across the UK within programme. Oxford Brookes University was a pioneering participant within the programme. You can watch a short video case study of Oxford Brookes University's carbon management progress to date.
