The Carbon Trust launches carbon reduction label

The Carbon Trust has launched a carbon reduction label that demonstrates a commitment from companies to reduce the carbon footprint of their products. The new label will help consumers make purchasing decisions by displaying a measure of a product's carbon content from source to store and its disposal.

The label is based on a methodology for measuring embodied carbon developed by the Carbon Trust over the past 18 months and will be applicable to a wide range of products. As part of the initial phase of the scheme, the methodology will be reviewed by a specially-created Technical Advisory Group chaired by Jim Skea, research director of the UK Energy Resource Centre, with members from across Government, business, environment and consumer groups.

The review will include a detailed consultation with industry and stakeholders.

In this initial phase of the scheme's development, the label and methodology will be trialled by a number of major brands including Walkers, Boots and innocent, in order to test and build consumer understanding. Other businesses interested in taking part in this initial phase can find out more or submit an expression of interest by visiting www.carbon-label.co.uk
