Reports to: Head of IT
Definition By Enterprise Architecture, we mean a set of documents and diagrams that define what we have now and what we aim to develop with regard to: • IT strategy and its links to Carbon Trust business strategy • Information & data architecture e.g. logical and physical data models and taxonomies • Business processes & their support by IT systems • Application architecture i.e. the list of applications that we have and the interfaces between them • IT infrastructure including LAN, WAN, servers and specifications of equipment • IT security
Purpose and scope of the role (to include management and budgetary responsibility): Responsible for, specifically to: • Develop, own and lead the Carbon Trust’s Enterprise Architecture • Provide technical leadership for IT • Liaise with IT Project Managers, developers and the Applications Team to ensure project solution compliance with the Enterprise Architecture • Provide architectural guidance as part of our impact analysis for changes • Develop relationships with Business Owners of systems and Carbon Trust directors in order to understand business needs and direction and ensure that our Enterprise Architecture supports our business • Liaise with our IT Managed Services provider (Atos Origin) for infrastructure elements of the IT Architecture • Liaise with relevant IT vendors & monitor IT marketplace developments that could affect us • Contribute to business plans and budgets for IT
Main duties and responsibilities: • Develop and maintain in depth knowledge of the Carbon Trust Business, the interdependencies of the various functions and how the IT systems and data support those functions. • Provide expert advice to IT projects on solutions • Own and maintain the Enterprise Architecture and roadmap for rollout • Monitor and review new and emerging technologies and their relevance to Carbon Trust • Ensure that the Carbon trust Enterprise Architecture is documented and published to all stakeholders • Ensure that the Enterprise Architecture is fit-for-purpose and maximises the value of our IT investment • Develop and maintain links with all stakeholders • Negotiate the rationalization of the current architecture through new business projects • Identify pragmatic solutions for projects such that standards are complied with and business needs are met • Establish and chair regular architecture steering group meetings with appropriate stakeholders
Key Performance Indicators • Production of architecture documents to agreed plan and quality (as determined by Head of IT, Applications Manager and Operations Director) • Evidence of raising risks and providing useful advice to developers and project managers • Positive feedback from stakeholders on understanding of their needs and frequency of contact • Ability to summarise business direction and explain relative priorities to satisfaction of Operations Director • Ability to summarise IT market developments and describe their importance to Carbon Trust to satisfaction of Head of IT • Ability to show how architecture activities provide business value to satisfaction of Operations Director
Key skills • Experienced Enterprise Architect with strong application and data skills • Excellent listener and abstract thinker • Strong skills in analysis, description and explanation both oral and written (able to explain technical issues in non-technical language) • Good influencing and communication skills • Experience of defining the future direction of Enterprise Architecture, agreeing with all stakeholders and implementing through business projects whilst minimising the proliferation of point solutions • Ability to manage Infrastructure architecture through a third party • Good knowledge of the IT marketplace including technologies, approaches and packages • Highly self-motivated and self-directed
Qualifications and experience required: Degree qualified – 2:1 or above in a relevant subject • Experience of providing an Enterprise Architect function for one or more companies • Developing and managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders Ideally, experience of: • Working in a heavily outsourced IT operation • The applications and development market • Working in a small, flexible organisation
