Purpose and scope of the role: In early 2007, The Carbon Trust launched an initiative help companies measure, reduce and communicate the carbon footprint of goods & services, including the development of a carbon reduction product label. The Carbon Label Company (CLC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Carbon Trust, has been established to run the carbon footprinting and product labelling service: to work with businesses to measure, reduce and carbon label their products. The scheme was launched with PepsiCo, Boots, and Innocent Drinks, and is currently being piloted with 20 companies covering over 70 products, predominantly focused on the UK consumer market. The Carbon Label Company is now looking to expand into selected international markets, focussing initially on US and continental Europe.
This role sits within the Carbon Label Company, reporting directly to the General Manager. The main function of the role is to certify that product carbon footprints submitted by a client to the CLC have been calculated in accordance with BSI PAS 2050, and as such, that the products are eligible to seek a license to use the CLC’s Carbon Reduction Label. If a product fails certification, it is the role of the Carbon Footprint Certifier to provide constructive feedback to allow the client or their appointed consultants to improve the carbon footprint model.
The labelling scheme is at an early stage in its development, as such there is scope to play a lead role in the development of the scheme and of the Carbon Label Company to maximise the carbon saving potential and the commercial opportunity for the Carbon Trust.
