'Defrost on demand' is a system which allows a refrigeration product, such as a supermarket display fridge or freezer to defrost itself only when necessary, rather than on a scheduled timescale. Instead of starting defrosting every 8 hours, the unit can individually delay the process until it is necessary by monitoring the unit.
The Carbon Trust helped JTL Systems who had the idea for the product, to develop it and then encouraged Waitrose (part of the John Lewis Partnership) to take part in a trial. The system saves an average of 9% of the energy used, a total cost saving per unit of £5000 each year.
