The Henderson Group - case study

With help from the Carbon Trust Henderson Group investigated ways to reduce energy costs through their refrigeration and lighting systems.

With the help and support of the Carbon Trust and our managing agent EFM, we have made real progress in reducing our energy usage at the shopping centre. In just under a year we have saved more than 7 per cent of our energy usage, have formed an energy committee and are testing a pilot scheme on replacing halogen bulbs with fluorescent ones.

The business case

The Henderson Group includes a wholesale business, supplying food and related products to 400 independent retailers and 55 company-owned convenience outlets throughout Northern Ireland. Owing to the continued increase in energy costs and the environmental impact of increased consumption, the company, with help from the Carbon Trust investigated ways to reduce both energy costs and CO2 emissions.

Energy savings

The refrigeration and lighting systems were highlighted as the main areas of concern. Specifications for more energy efficient systems were implemented in all redevelopments. Combined, the new systems have delivered typical total emissions savings of 40 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year per store.

Phillip Wright, Senior Property Manager at Henderson said, “What we hadn’t appreciated was quite how much the focus of the Carbon Trust would help us. The audits also led directly to the writing of a corporate energy efficient specification which has helped us get competitive tenders for new more energy-efficient equipment.”
