Express Engineering - case study

Case study: February 2009

Express Engineering turned to the Carbon Trust for expert advice on carbon and energy saving projects. The company then applied for two business loans to fund the installation of energy saving equipment.

At first we were a little sceptical about the real financial benefits of energy efficiency – but we’ve achieved fantastic savings. We were delighted with the financial support and practical guidance we received from the Carbon Trust, which enabled us to put our green thinking into practice.
Dave Fullen, Production Manager, Express Engineering

When Express Engineering, a Gateshead-based manufacturer of precision machined components, wanted to improve its energy efficiency, it turned to the Carbon Trust for expert advice.

From recommendations made, the company has revised the way it deals with waste and recycling, and revamped its own packaging to reutilise the waste polystyrene from deliveries in, cutting packaging costs by about 50%.

It also used the report to successfully apply for three loans to fund the installation of a new variable speed compressor, a monitoring and control system for its heating, and the replacement of an inefficient gas heating system.

Overall, the equipment changes have saved the business £42,600 a year, reducing the CO2 output by 182 tonnes.
