A spider block is a residential block (central block with multiple wings) like 'legs'. Taking one block over a year and doing a refurbishment followed by monitoring of cost savings was an ideal case study for the Low Carbon Building Acceleration programme.
It allowed the Carbon Trust to take one part of a large organisation and show how incorporating low carbon technology during a refurbishment can deliver cost savings over the long term to potentially lead the way for all future refurbishments.
A vital part of the project has been the types of devices selected and the monitoring devices. Due to high turnover of soliders using the blocks relying on training and or signage to reduce carbon use can be ineffective. Automating features to turn off when not in use, individual monitoring of areas for temperature control and timed switches which allow use to be scheduled around high peak hours is essential.
