Commenting on the announcement Tom Delay, Chief Executive of The Carbon Trust said; “The EU has proposed stretching targets for renewable energy. In the UK, this amounts to 15% of the UK’s primary energy needs to come from renewable energy sources by 2020. The current figure is 2%. It is obvious that we need a major step change to meet this goal, which could, for example, require us to meet up to 40% of our electricity needs from renewables. “To have any hope of achieving our renewable targets offshore wind will be a critical technology due to the UK’s vast resource and offshore wind’s potential to deliver significant quantities of zero carbon power over the next twelve years. The Crown Estate has stepped up to the challenge through its proposed 50% investment in development with a structure that incentivises scale, shares risk and focusses on delivery. This is a key step in ensuring this vast resource is developed on time to deliver on our 2020 renewable target and to put us on a path to meet our 2050 carbon reduction goals.”
