Carbon News - How to save energy and save money for your business
Welcome to the spring edition of Carbon News. In this edition we report on our recent survey of UK business leaders, which revealed that a third of UK businesses now have a carbon emission-reduction policy or plan in place. We also bring you the views of the Chairman of the world renowned Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Dr Pachauri. He believes UK businesses have a leading role to play in tackling climate change. Read on for more news and help in reducing your organisation’s carbon footprint.

An interview with Dr Rajendra K Pachauri

Our recent Carbon Trust Winter
Lecture was delivered in London
by Dr Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC). In 2007 the IPCC
shared the Nobel Peace Prize with
Al Gore for their work on climate
change. In a half-hour pre-lecture
interview, Dr Pachauri gave his
views on the recent Bali conference
and the leadership role that he sees
the UK and its businesses taking
in climate change mitigation.

Our Directed Research initiative targets next generation bioenergy

With promising research avenues not always being identified or given sufficient focus, our Directed Research initiative is identifying innovation gaps and finding funding mechanisms to commercialise the technology. The Carbon Trust Advanced Bioenergy Accelerator is now putting together a multidisciplinary team to help accelerate research on upgrading pyrolysis oils – a leading option for the next generation of bioenergy, which could deliver low-cost, sustainable substitutes for transport fuels.

A range of new workplace posters

To encourage employees to adopt
Office lights thumbnail simple energy efficient behaviour,
we have developed a new range of
informative posters and stickers
that bring carbon savings to life in
relevant and engaging ways.
By putting these up in your
workplace, you can show your
colleagues how they can all make
a difference.

Our business barometer highlights accelerating carbon awareness

Just over a quarter of UK businesses
have been affected by climate change.
Almost the same number (27%) of UK
businesses now see climate change
as an opportunity. While small and
medium sized businesses are
focusing on the financial benefits of
reducing energy usage, FTSE companies
are more likely to see climate change
as an opportunity to rethink their products
and services. Progress has accelerated
recently: 32% of all companies
surveyed have established a carbon
emission-reduction policy or plan, and
most of those have done so in the
last two years.
